Scientists capture viruses building themselves in real time
Researchers at Oxford used mass photometry and single-molecule trapping to watch virus-like particles assemble piece by piece in real time. They discovered the process starts with weak, reversible interactions where protein building blocks collide and form temporary bonds. When five larger protein units form a pentagonal ring, a stable structure emerges that guides the assembly forward, making the process both reliable and efficient.
