JWST finds 18 galaxies at z ≈ 10.5

Dense galaxy cluster spotted when universe was less than half a billion years old

The James Webb Space Telescope has identified a candidate galaxy overdensity containing 18 galaxies packed within 8 million light-years at redshift z ≈ 10.5, when the universe was less than half a billion years old. This region is four times denser than expected and may represent an emerging ionized bubble, the first produced by a galaxy overdensity identified to date.

This particular case provides a rare opportunity to investigate how the environment influences galaxy evolution at the very beginning of time.
